Balance is survival

Allah loves Moderation and balance:

There are many verses about keeping balance in our actions, feelings and relationships. It encourages us to avoid extremes. Allah has also mentioned the balance that prevails in smooth running of entire universe. Every creation including winds, sun, moon and stars work in a regular way. Allah mentions in Quran that everything is rotating in its own circle and no one is allowed to leave its path. A few verses are here to understand the balance demanded from mankind in their lives.

Moderation in pace and voice:

وَاقْصِدْ فِي مَشْيِكَ وَاغْضُضْ مِن صَوْتِكَ ۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ الْأَصْوَاتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِيرِ

“And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys." Luqman 31:19

Moderation in expending:

وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا أَنفَقُوا لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ قَوَامًا

“They are those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, but follow a middle way between them.”

Surat Al-Furqan 25:67

Moderation in Salah:

وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًا

“Do not recite too loudly in your prayer nor to softly, but seek a way between them.”

Surat Al-Isra 17:110

Moderation in charity:

وَابْتَغِ فِيمَا آتَاكَ اللَّهُ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ ۖ وَلَا تَنسَ نَصِيبَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا

“Seek the home of the Hereafter by that which Allah has given you, but do not forget your share of the world.”

Surat Al-Qasas 28:77

Respecting non-Muslim bier:

Allah says at a number of spots in Quran that He wants ease on us, He doesn’t burden us with what is beyond our capacity and so on. So we should refrain from going on extremes, especially with relations and behaviour with non-Muslim neighbours or colleagues. Islam doesn’t stop us from displaying good conduct to non-Muslims who are not at war with us. Secluding them leads to close the doors of showcasing Islam for them with our good behaviour. In the following are a few authentic ahadith on this topic.

عن قيس بن سعد إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّتْ بِهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ فَقِيلَ إِنَّهُ يَهُودِيٌّ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَتْ نَفْسًا

Qays ibn Sa’d reported: A funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he stood up. It was said to him, “It is a Jew.” The Prophet said;Was he not a soul?

حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مِقْسَمٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ مَرَّ بِنَا جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقُمْنَا بِهِ‏.‏ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّهَا جَنَازَةُ يَهُودِيٍّ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا ‏"‏‏.

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah; “A funeral procession passed in front of us and the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up and we too stood up. We said, 'O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! This is the funeral procession of a Jew." He said, "Whenever you see a funeral procession, you should stand up."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1311

عن أنس بن مالك : أن جنازة يهودي مرت برسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقام فقالوا : يا رسول الله إنها جنازة يهودي فقال : إنما قمت للملائكة

المستدرك على الصحيحين

“ It is reported on the authority of Anas bin Malik: A jew’s bier passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he stood; and [the companions] said: O Messenger of Allah [ﷺ], it is a jew’s bier. He [ﷺ] said: But I stood for the angels.”

(Al-Mustadrak ‘ala al-Sahiihayn)
